Earthquakes

The intensity of Haiti's earthquake was 10,000, while the intensity of Japan's earthquake was 1,000,000. Therefore Japan's earthquake was greater by 990,000.

Lugares a vistar

Conic Sections

Conic Section: The intersection into a plane and right, circular cone known as a hyperbola, ellipse or parabola.
Many real-world uses of an ellipse can be seen in many types of architecture, a glass of tipped water, even food is cut into ellipses. It can be used to create a focal point for many reasons from billiard tables to medical procedures. Parabolas are often an outcome of water fountains or dolphins diving out of the water. Parabolas are the idea behind headlights, shooting cannons, and telescopes. Examples of hyperbolas can be seen in an hourglass or a cooling tower. The knowledge of this conic section helped create long-range navigation through radio signals.
A foci is a a point having the property that the distances from any point on a curve to it and to a fixed line have a constant ratio for all points on the curve. The directrix is the fixed line that describes the curve or surface. A circle is a closed plane curve consisting of all points at a given distance from a point within it called the center.
An ellipse is a conic section that has the same distances of its periphery to the foci. A hyperbola however always has two different distances. A parabola has a set of fized lines that are equidistant to its fixed points.

Physics

Today in my Algebra II class we had a little experiment outside with physics. We were asked to throw a bean bag underhand from one yard, while timing how long it took to hit the ground. We followed by doing this with a wiffle ball the same way. We used the physics equation h=-16t+Vt+h to find the velocity. My initial velocity was 34.9 ft/sec for the wiffle ball.  For the bean bag my initial velocity was 35.9 ft/sec. My general equation for the wiffle ball was h=-16(2.09) +v(2.09) + 3 and the time at its highest was .85 seconds while the height was 20.3 feet. The time the bean bag hit its highest point was at .85 seconds at 22.9 feet. I found these times and maximum heights by plugging the initial velocities into the equation.
I used a graphing calculator so I was able to map where the max height was at what time by using the x and y coordinates.

Functions

A function is a factor that goes into a system and comes out differently based on a pattern. Functions are used in the real world through technology. Encrypting is done through computers for security reasons, it could also be used for military reasons. It is important to know how a function works because you may need to know how to decode something, and it is only going to become more complex.

Guess my number!

Today in Algebra ll I learned a little Algebra trick. Move through these steps, and I bet I can guess your number!

1. Pick a number
2. Double it
3. Subtract 2
3. Divide it by 2
4. Add 2
5. Subtract your original number

I bet your number is 1!
